I had this thought tonight and spent half an hour goofing around on it. Posting immediately to be timely for the holiday.

I haven't been writing lately. Thinking about various stories but not settling down to anything. I woke up yesterday morning with this ficlet in my mind and managed to write it last night. It needs a title but I'm just going to post it here and hope I'm back on a roll.

3 Dog Night was fabulous and I found myself woobiefying the whole night. I don't know why, sometimes characters want to walk around and do what I'm doing.

John bounced on his heels. "Get changed into shorts. I got tickets for Three Dog Night at the State Fair."

"Three Dog Night?" Rodney asked blankly. "You mean the child is black the child is white the whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight, that Three Dog Night? The band with the highly complex and articulate lyrics?"

"At least they have the excuse of being a decade before ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
side by side on my piano keyboard, oh lord why don't we?"

"Point taken, but it still doesn't explain why I would want to attend the State Fair, which will be miserably hot, and listen to people in their sixties sing songs of idealism from the seventies?"

"I'll buy you a funnel cake?" John suggested.

"Throw in a deep-fried onion and you have a deal." As Rodney walked up the stairs, he yelled back, "But I'm bringing my earplugs!"

~~~~
The acoustics were atrocious, as Rodney had predicted, but John was in raptures, leaning forward in the horribly uncomfortable chair, singing all the words under his breath, one sandaled foot tapping in rhythm. Watching John be happy was worth it, Rodney decided.
~~~~

"This is a Tom Jones song!" Rodney yelled in John's ear, forgetting that John was probably hearing better than him, since he wasn't wearing earplugs. "Tom Jones! I can't believe they did that long lead-in about how they did this song first before Joe Cocker stole it and made it popular! Tom Jones made it popular!"

John leaned over, and in perfect time with the singer, crooned, "You can leave your hat on," and not that Rodney ever did wear a hat, but when John stared into his eyes with that intense of a look, worrying about the attribution of the popularity of a song from last century seemed silly.

~~~~
Ah, there was more but that's all I remember right now, and I should be getting to bed. It's funny how I forget things. They came back for the encore and I was running through... okay, they've done Family of Man, Liar, Momma Told Me Not To Come, An Old Fashioned Love Song, Easy to be Hard, One, Black and White, Never Been to Spain, that's all the biggies, what could they have saved? And of course they ripped into Joy To The World and I slapped myself upside the head because its'a almost criminal to forget Jeremiah the bullfrog.
I went to my happy place in the grocery store today. It's a silly thing, but it's slowly solidifying. In the produce area, and Rodney would be frustrated, trying to pry the plastic bag apart. Not that he wanted to start eating healthy fruits and vegetables, but he'd do what he needed to keep his son. He glanced over to check on Timmy, making sure he was still chatting with one of the elderly ladies that he always seemed to find.
The bag was plucked out of his hands, a strange man rubbing the bag between his palms, making it open. "It's easier to do it this way."
"Yes, thank you," Rodney snapped, grabbing it back, feeling his too pale skin flushing. He was a genius, after all, he shouldn't have difficulty opening a bag. It was only the unfamiliarity of dealing with them. Food in boxes was so much easier. "I've got it now."
"No problem."
Rodney began picking up apples, looking over them suspiciously, placing the best in the bag. "Yes, what?" he asked the stranger.
"This seems like a nice place. I'm thinking of moving here when I get out."
Get out? Oh, Air Force. Yes, Rodney saw enough of airmen in their different styles of uniforms to recognize one off-duty, even if the spiky wild hair seemed non-regulation. "Yes, very well, good neighborhood, have fun," he said dismissively.
"Maybe I'll see you around," he said, but Rodney was already contemplating oranges. How many pieces of fruit did one need anyway?
Happy place!
ETA: Grocery shopping wasn't a task they normally did together. John happily deferred all food preparation to Rodney, who had his own schedule and ways of creating his culinary masterpieces.
But one morning after breakfast out, they ended up at the Raley's, John and Timmy trailing behind Rodney, John occasionally pulling the cart to one side as Rodney tended to park it in the middle of the aisle.
In the produce section, Rodney studied the apples intently as he yanked a plastic bag off the roll, and briskly rubbed it between his palms to make it open. In John's peripheral vision, Timmy was chatting with an old lady.
John liked Rodney's hands, and he was very fond of the way they explored his body. But he could picture them now, trying to pluck a plastic bag apart, and imagine he heard little noises of frustration. "Hey!"
Rodney glanced up from the apples. "Yes?"
Cupping his face, John leaned toward him, giving him a gentle kiss on the lips. "Maybe some things were meant to be, you know?"
Giving John a fond, if rather bemused look, Rodney asked, "I assume you don't mean in some mystically nonsensical way, do you?"
"I just meant - I'm glad things worked out like they have. That we're here, grocery shopping. Together."
"Yes, yes, me too. Now could you pick out a bunch of grapes? Seedless green, and make sure that they're not too ripe."
"Yeah, sure." John strolled off, thoroughly content.
In other news, Bascon was enjoyable fun. I was there Friday and Saturday, attended some interesting panels, wandered through the dealer's room and art show, which were cool but not too detrimental to my pocketbook, and watched the vid show. Got to spend time with [personal profile] gloriana and the hubby, and met [personal profile] jedinic for the first time, which was very cool.
Having John slip out of bed before him wasn't unusual. Cops had weird hours. The bed always started to cool without John's skinny presence, so after drifting a bit, Rodney would reluctantly surrender to waking up.
The weird thing this morning was no Timmy, no need to tap on his door, no concern about feeding his son a good breakfast.
Ginger and Einstein were still there, Einstein whining at the back door to be let in, Ginger waiting placidly by her food bowl, hoping for a second breakfast. Rodney obeyed Einstein's wishes and told Ginger, "I know John fed you," as he poked his head in the refrigerator, trying to decide what to make for his own meal. He finally opted for cereal, much as John and Timmy's bowls in the sink indicated they had. A big breakfast could wait for tomorrow, when all three of them could eat it.
The fire truck sounded its sirens as Rodney was halfway through his second cup of coffee. Abandoning his laptop, and still dressed in his blue robe and slippers, he went outside as the truck passed his house. Ronon was already there, dressed in jeans and red t-shirt, his yappy little dog cradled in one arm.
"Good morning," Rodney said, waving his coffee cup.
Ronon gave a grunt. Rodney liked that about having Ronon as a neighbor, not ever feeling compelled to make social chitchat about boring subjects.
The pick-up trucks were passing by, kids dressed in baseball uniforms throwing candy at anyone watching the parade. Princess was particularly yappy and excitable this morning, which seemed to encourage the kids to aim right at her. Ronon protectively tucked her closer to his body as Rodney picked up candy, trying not to spill coffee and grateful that his robe had deep pockets.
"Pirates," was all Ronon said, but Rodney stopped bothering with the candy. John was in the passenger seat, the baseball cap hiding his distinctive hair, almost disguising him. A sign on the side of the truck proclaimed 'Pirates' and big bunches of balloons were tied to the cab.
"Rodney!" John said loudly, giving a thumbs-up. In the back of the truck with the rest of his team, Timmy waved, yelling, "Dad!"
Rodney waved back at both of them, grinning, choked up with happiness at his husband the assistant coach and his son the catcher.
I need to work on the camellia debudding, and I always have this conversation with myself when I do. But it's such a weird, local thing, I don't know if it makes a good ficlet? Anyway, now I've written it out, and I can have a new conversation with myself. *beams*
